The 604,743 sq. ft. Lower Buckeye Jail has 1,121 cells and a capacity of 2,440 inmates. Currently the facility houses all classifications of inmates, and includes separate housing for juvenile inmates (who are remanded on adult charges) and various types of special management inmates including a Psychiatric Unit with a 268 inmate capacity. The housing units were designed to minimize inmate movement by providing needs (such as medical, education, visitation, religious services and various rehabilitation programs) within the inmate’s assigned housing unit, thus practically eliminating routine inmate movement
